4. You’re talking about two different things.

   The ending of the show always has been what it is here: the driver is not shown at all, and C.C. addresses a “Lelouch” in her final words. It’s left unclear as to whether she’s addressing the driver of the cart, or Lelouch’s soul in C’s World.

   Robert is talking about a falsified clip that has often gone around, showing the camera panning to show the driver’s face. That ending is fake.

   Sunrise actually did, in a way, change the ending, though. Not in the series directly, but in the recap DVDs they released a year or two later. And the change wasn’t to make it more ambiguous.

   The story recap for R2 cuts out the final cart scene, and instead cuts to C.C. monologuing over the end credits. In that monologue, she flat out says Lelouch is dead.
