I love RTD, some of my favourites episodes were made by him, but I’m beginning to become disillusioned with him. After the Chibnal era I was really excited for what he was going to bring to the table. It’s not even about deep lore, the theories or an overarching plot, I’ve just not felt entertained. That’s it. I’m not enjoying myself, I don’t feel the excitement of anticipating the next episode. I’m tired of the feeling of going through a series with the mentality of ‘will next episode’s be better or worse?’ That’s not how it should feel to watch it. I’m going to continue on, mostly to see if there will be a shift in direction or at least anticipate Moffat and other guest writers, but I just want to stop feeling embarrassed for a show I love and want to share with the people I love.
RTD was never very good at writing Doctor Who imo, he’s much better when he isn’t writing sci-fi which he just can’t write, but he never used to be this bad. I had hope he’d have learned from the mistakes of his previous era like how Moffat constantly grew as a writer and got better and better, but he hasn’t grown at all and in fact has gotten worse.
For me the big issue is that we pretty much never get to feel like the Doctor is in his element. The stories themselves are largely fine, not amazing or terrible, but fine. But one of the joys of DW is watching the Doctor be completely the Doctor, and this season has too many episodes where he’s either cometely on the backfoot or largely removed from it.
I also dislike that the episode that involves Wales makes a great point about how the Welsh have suffered under the English but it is drowned by the rest of the episode, and in the end the episode doesn’t really say much of anything.
I pretty much agree with your feelings. I kept wanting to love it. It kept feeling like it was telling me I should be excited, but was never feeling it. I did really like the 73 yards ep & found the Dot and Bubble one both funny and sad, but not much excitement for any of the others and some boredom with others especially when they’d start singing and dancing.
