  1. It had to happen.

The bittersweet, poignant brilliance of Assassination Classroom is that it literally tells you what needs to happen by the end. Koro-sensei has to die. The class has to kill him. This is the final goal. And yet, the show repeatedly demonstrates Koro-sensei as a net positive in the lives of every. Single. Student. The manga moreso, which delves into the personal lives of a good chunk of them even more.

So much that you almost forget that it was always going to end this way, whether we like it or not. It’s not so much hard to watch as it is just cripplingly saddening, and that final scream of anguish from Nagisa gets me everytime. It’s one of the few times I’ve been rendered completely immobile from a piece of media, literally unable to do anything else for the rest of the day cause I just can’t bring myself to do anything.

And yet, it’s partly why AssClass remains a stone cold classic in my mind. It’s emotionally powerful in a way you don’t expect, shifting from wacky comedy to sci-fi actioner to emotional drama (sometimes within scenes) and ends on a sucker punch to the gut that also works as a brilliant emotional climax.
