  1. Also, as a non-manga reader, here is my interpretation of events. Reze was raised by the Soviets as a human weapon, most likely was given the bomb devil’s heart in the same way Denji got chainsaw’s and katana man got sword devil’s. There was a throwaway line in season 1 about how the Soviets were weaponizing devils. Reze is most likely the fruit borne from those efforts. And the Soviets seemingly want chainsaw’s heart for the same unknown reason so many devils do.

Reze meant to kill him the moment she stepped into the phone booth with him, not for the Gun devil but for the Soviets. But she saw his face and couldn’t bring herself to do it, hence her laughing and crying. As an orphan raised to be a human weapon, she’s probably never experienced any kind of connection like this before. I think this is why her flirting attempts all feel very weird and obviously trying very hard: she really does like Denji, but her only ideas of how to do this are from whatever training she’s had. She also hates the idea that Denji is living in a similar way to her, being used as a tool by those around him. Because of this she tries to get him to run away. I think that was her last ditch effort to avoid having to kill him, and I think she was being genuine. I don’t know if her plan was to convince the Soviets he could be spared and be useful to them as-is, or if she had some other plan of escape in mind. Considering that after he said no, she defaulted to completing the mission, I think bringing him to the Soviets is most likely.

I don’t think she was working for the gun devil. Unless the gun devil and the soviets are aligned somehow, in which case it all makes sense. If that’s not the case, I think that was a lie told to Beam by Makima to remove qualms about fighting her after Reze went the non-hostile route. Makima is definitely working big manipulations behind the scenes here. In her little story at the end, I think we’re meant to see Denji as the dog used to root out Reze, the mouse, especially because this show loves any kind of dog metaphors around Denji.

Also, fun fact: in the pool scene, the spider traps a monarch butterfly in its web. Many people take this at face value to mean Reze is trapping Denji in her web of love. But the monarch is deadly poisonous to spiders. By falling into Reze’s trap, Denji sealed her fate.
