3. One of my favorite episodes of the show, and it has one of my favorite details.

   In the season 1 finale, Jack and Locke are headed to the hatch site to blow it open with dynamite. They have a discussion about destiny (one of my favorite scenes) and Jack tells Locke that he doesn’t believe in destiny. Locke responds with “yes you do, you just don’t know it yet”.

   Now in the season 5 finale Jack is leading another crew to the same hatch site to once again blow it up, only this time he’s doing it because he believes it’s his destiny. And the kicker is that when Jack and Locke had that discussion in season 1, the events of The Incident had already happened 30 years earlier, making Lockes wording to Jack more meaningful. “Yes you do, you just don’t know it yet”.

   And I realize that Locke (and the writers) didn’t know this information during season 1 when that discussion happened, I just love that they made it tie back in so perfectly.

4. Joseph was Jesus’ father and is unrelated to the story of Jacob and Esau. Jacob and Esau “were” fraternal twins, grandchildren of Abraham and sons of Issac (the very same Issac god told Abraham to sacrifice and then took the order back at the last second). All Old Testament stuff.

   Interestingly, despite Jacob being portrayed as the hero, in Genesis he does some back handed stuff. Esau is the older twin and this has a birthright. But Jacob gets Esau to sell the birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew after returning from famished lands (ie while under duress). Jacob (at his mom’s direction because…women are so often the instigators of bad acts in the Bible) deceives Issac into giving Jacob his blessing rather than Esau (who he intended to give it to). Lots of reasons for Esau to hate and want to kill Jacob in the show.

   Later, Jacob (now renamed Israel), leads his descendants (the Israelites) from their lands that have been in a 20-year famine to Egypt and to their eventual slavery.
