  1. My only complaint is that Eve doesn’t really have a style for most of the movie. Which is something I think only got better with Wick 1-4. A new character felt as if they had a moveset like a video game character, only in real life. They moved a certain way, they had advantages they played towards, and disadvantages they try and avoid. But Eve feels like she just kind of does whatever, which I get is what the movie was going for. Her whole introduction was basically “She’s not as good as the other assassins, but she’ll make them play on her terms not theirs” but we only see that twice in the movie, once when she has grenades in the shop, and once when she’s getting choked on the table in the cult diner. Every other fight she pretty much just beats them normally, they never put emphasis on this part of her character which is supposed to be like her whole thing.

And I think the reason to blame is how the movie is formatted. She’s being put into situations that we would see John be put in in the later wick movies. But the only reason why John was progressively put in more wacky situations, was because we already knew how he fought, so we needed to see the circumstances change to give us something new. But Eve is immediately thrown into these situations, John didn’t start with searching for a gun in a pile of plates. He started with normal fights that he won in interesting ways. That let us get to know his character and his moves. I think her fight against Wick greatly highlights this fact, cuz John is doing John Wick things, but Eve is… Just like shooting and grappling with him, she legit feels like a jobber character that John would kill in 4 seconds in the first movie, she doesn’t even feel like a named character. Like I get she’s losing the fight, but she’s losing the fight in a basic way.

Action movies present their characters through action, so if the action is more focused on the situation rather than the action of the character. Then I don’t know the character.
