Episode trivia for “Cyber Soldier Porygon”, more commonly known as “Electric Soldier Porygon” or “Computer Warrior Porygon”:
– This episode is infamous for causing epilectic seizures in over 700 Japanese people (Not just children; victims ranged from 3-58 years old), as well as induced vomiting and irritated eyes due to use of a flashing red and blue strobe effect in the four-second section when Pikachu used an Electric attack on a group of vaccine missiles. Because of that, this episode was never commercially released (so no DVD release) or re-broadcast anywhere in the world, and the show went on hiatus for four months.
– The resulting hiatus also impacted the production of “Pokémon the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back” leading to the creation of a prologue explaining Mewtwo’s backstory, since the episodes foreshadowing Mewtwo’s appearance were now airing *after* the movie’s release.
– To avoid further controversy, Porygon has never had an important role in another episode since, only relegated to cameos in some movies, despite Pikachu being the one to cause the seizure-inducing explosion. However, as Pikachu was the marketable mascot, Porygon ‘took the blame.’ In September 2020, the social media manager for the official English language Pokémon Twitter account posted “Porygon did nothing wrong.” However, the tweet was deleted shortly after. (Hope the social media manager didn’t get fired for that!) Porygon’s signature move Conversion has also never appeared in the anime or movies since.
– This episode was awarded “Most Photosensitive Epileptic Seizures Caused by a Television Show” by The Guinness Book of World Records
