I have read the novel and seen the miniseries, but this version is superior in terms of capturing the spirit of the characters and their real live counterparts, with the acting, writing, set design, costumes, music really amplifying the authenticity. There are a couple things that I wish were more fleshed out in this version of the show, but it is the show to beat for 2024. As others have commented, the showrunners said a second season is unlikely because the roadmap they made for season one doesn’t allow for them to make another season. Highly recommend listening to the podcasts that FX made for the series as well as watching the original series from 1980.
I totally get everybody wanting a season 2 but this series just did a great job telling the story they wanted to tell. It felt perfect. Not many 1 season shows I’ve watched that left me satisfied with the ending.
This is unfortunately where the book ends and the showrunners have been pretty definitive that they like where the book and the show ends and have no intention of making up story beyond that. But sometimes good things come to an end just where they are supposed to and this was an amazing finale.

No season 2 required, this is perfect as is.
