god the last part with the real Winters talking about what his grandson asked him, gets me every damn time. such an incredible show and beautiful tribute to the men who served.
“The Pacific” isn’t as goog as “The Band of Brothers” but still worth the watch. There’s a third WWII documentary mini-series by Tom Hanks and Steven Speilberg coming out in September 2023. It’s call “Masters of the Air”. Band of Brothers was about the battles on land, The Pacific was about the battles on the sea, and now Master of the Air will be about battles in the sky. The reason I don’t think “The Pacific” and probably “Master of the Air” weren’t or won’t be as good as “The Band of Brothers” is because they were filmed to late and most of the real life people have passed away and you don’t get the commentary by the real people that the movie portray’s like you do in “The Band of Brothers”, that added commentary gives it more of a sense of reality.
In the episode following the medic, the girl in the church Renee Lemaire actually died because she kept going back into the burning and collapsing aid station to help evacuate people. I believe she saved 6 or 7 but on the last time in to save one more she was killed by the building collapsing on her.
Speirs should have shot that man, unfortunately he got away with everything he did
He got sentenced to life but got let out early even though he killed the German civilian, a British soldier, shot Grant and opened fire on Russian soldiers. So messed up.
A British Major, he should have been handed over the British Army and executed
Bradford Freeman was the last of the 101 Airborne and he passed away last year.
The actual case of the soldier who snapped at the end was actually even more messed up then what was portrayed. He shot the German civilian, left the scene & he fired at some Russian soldiers he later on met up with & somehow got out of that alive and took off. He ended up coming across two British soldiers and opened fire on them killing one and then was confronted by Grant who we saw in the show get shot. He ran away and was apprehended an hour not too long after when he got caught attempting to rape a woman. He was sentenced to life in jail
But was released early which seems a bit crazy
I watched this as it aired and I burst into tears when the real Richard Winters is finally given a name at the end.
Really hope The Pacific wins the replacement poll, need those reactions in my life! The Pianist is also a fantastic movie showing the Polish Jews plight during the Second World War, highly recommend!
I borrowed my dad’s boxset of this show without his knowing when I was way too young, it harrowed me for years. I still don’t think TV has got any better than this series.
Dunkirk is a great movie, a few other recommendations are Das Boot and Tora, Tora, Tora
Love Dunkirk and Das Boot. Also worth nothing Das Boot is ranked #75 on the IMDB Top 100 Movies of All time.
There actually is a companion series called The Pacific that focuses on the Pacific theatre if the war. It is also 10 episodes.
They know. I mean… they only literally mention it specifically and talk about it for several minutes…. so easy to miss, unless you watched the reaction lol
It’s literally a ten second segment, fuck outta here with your snark
Sadly I believe every single one of them has passed away by now. I was lucky enough to meet a vet of the war when I was in the 8th grade, and a Holocaust survivor but I’m just hopeful their memories don’t start to go away with the generations who will never get that experience.
There is an episode 11 of Band of Brothers — it is a documentary that they made while making this film — it is where all the interviews with the real guys came from. It is an excellent documentary and really ties up the whole story. It has actual footage of the war and the guys, etc. The documentary is called “We Stand Alone Together” and it is available on YouTube and it is an hour long. Really worth watching.
They said in the intro that they plan to watch it, it’ll be on next sunday.
