To this day this show and specifically this episode just hits every single note so well. So good.
Truly one of the best series or mini-series ever put to screen. The performances are so damn rich and deep, I can’t help but feel for all of them. I’d say this sadly blows Saving Private Ryan out of water, as I feel like it’s just a more epic yet more human version of that movie with just a tons more time dedicated to such a difficult time in history. One of my favourites and definitely a wonderful reaction.
A show so good I refuse to watch again because of how hard it hits.
I know everybody watches Saving Private Ryan but I grew up watching The Longest Day and The Battle of the Bulge with my dad and think you all should watch those. Hollywood versions but really good. I’ll throw Great Escape in there too. My dad also loved Tora, Tora, Tora but that’s for after you watch The Pacific.
Eagle’s Nest wasn’t burnt down — Hitler’s house was — which was not the same as the Eagle’s Nest — his actual house was further down the mountain near the town. The Eagle’s Nest is still there and you can visit it today — it is a museum and restaurant in Southern Germany. One of the premiers of Band of Brothers was done in Normandy. Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg flew all the guys there for the premiere and ceremonies, etc. You can see some footage of the Normandy premiere on YouTube. The writer of the Screen Play spent several months at Winter’s house writing it. Winters helped and approved all.
I love how the book came about because Ambrose heard of the reunion and a bunch of the guys were hanging out and talking to him. Winters didn’t go because he felt as their commanding officer they may not open up if he was there. Then they spent the night talking about Winters so Ambrose was like I have to talk to this man and it was an understanding that if Winters gave his approval of the book/show then the men gave theirs. They still respected his leadership decades after the war was over. Sadly the last member of the 101st passed last year so they are all gone now.
