There’s no real right answer to this and it’s an interesting debate to have, I’d say it’s not okay to take over someone’s will but there’s a lot of nuance to Aaron’s specific hypothetical
It’s a tough question, but when it’s posed in an absolutist way, like “Is it ever okay to…?” I tend to balk at the idea that “it’s NEVER okay to…” or that it’s “ALWAYS bad if…” Even if I can’t think of a situation that proves that it’d be okay (but so many have been mentioned already, including Aaron’s jumper situation), I’d still say that, yes, sometimes it is OK. To save their own life is one, if they’re not thinking clearly about wanting to end it, or if it is to save other peoples’ lives, like in Jessica Jones or the classic “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for.” It’s a very heady power and shouldn’t be used frivolously nor for personal gain. There are so many ways that it could be used unethically which is why I think most people are against it, but I do think there is a place for it. When Cate was on our side, we didn’t really have a problem with her controlling “bad people” so that her friends wouldn’t get caught or killed. It’s only after she turned it on them where we started hearing arguments about it taking away their agency. I’m saying that it IS situational and therefore may be okay at times, but I wouldn’t want that power. It’d be too easy to use for personal gain or just because you’re annoyed.
Right now I really like Emma and Sam arc this season
If Jessica jones has taught me anything it’s that mind controlling is NEVER ok even if it CAN help people doesn’t mean you have the right to make that choice for them
I’m of the mind that everyone deserves free will, but if there are lives at stake, then I think the right thing to do is whatever you can or are able to in order to save those lives. There are a lot of dark implications that come with someone having this ability (we saw it with Rufus and the cock-splosion last season) but there are also many acts you can do for the greater good, and I feel this is one of them.
Btw, about the butt-hole guy, I don’t think you’re actually inside him all the time. Based on what Cypher said in an earlier episode, it’s more like a pocket dimension: “Higher education for the gods, we claim, and yet we admit a boy with a quantum singularity for an asshole.” (there is probably a joke about black holes somewhere in here)
This is a bigger argument than brought up in the video imo. Taking away someone’s bodily autonomy and right to choose is never an option.
All I can think about when you raised this question was Incredibles with the jumping and suing
Same!!!! Literally my very first thought right before Aaron used his example😆 Wonder if he was thinking the same thing😂
Some people don’t want to be saved because they lost hope. But it still doesn’t allow you to take controll over their will, you need to talk to them and make them do the choice of saving themselves.
I think that she was wrong in doing it, but Marie is right now or was on a high horse because of what Cipher did all this season. Marie was in the wrong in this situation and she doesn’t have any right to judge Cate after what she did to her friends.
I say it’s ok!!!! I’m getting flashbacks to maaany discussions about Killgrave, X-Men and similar characters. As a society we tend to only focus on the negatives of an ability like that but I’ll say there’s a lot of good that that can bring. Aarons example, ‘These arn’t the Droids youre looking for,’ or situations involving self-harm, PTSD, or volatile hostage negotiations. Getting kids to eat their vegetables or brush their teeth (life saving lol) Imagine instead of a needle or drugs to sedate someone for a medical procedure you calm their mind instead. No side effects, addictions or trauma. So many other great uses that get overlooked by the darker sides of mind control.
Really liked this episode
